Last year saw a 10% increase in the checkout of library materials. More than 18 million books, DVDs, CDs and other materials were borrowed from LAPL.

The 72-branch plus Central Library system uses only 3% of the City’s general fund.
*Yet our staff reduction has been the largest in the city, next to Parks and Rec.
For the first time in our history, the library is now closed on Mondays and Sundays.

*LAPL is open 43,000 hours more than it was in 1982, but with 580 fewer employees.
*Last year the library had 1,132 employees. After the elimination of vacant positions and early retirement this year, the library had 877 employees, total. This was before added staff reductions.
*In the 1982, the 62 libraries of LAPL employed 1,457 employees…580 more than this year.
